Reply with your name, what you prefer to be called, and then recommend a local, low price food joint that is a hidden gem.
-
I’m Jeff Salbato (your teacher), but I prefer Jeff. You only need to introduce yourself in one of these sub-topics, but, because I’m the supposed leader here, I’ll post in all of them…
Hidden food joints: Arirang Korean, Coda Vietnamese Bakery, Magokoro Japanese (closed for now), Viet Rice, Gyros Mediterranean, Thai Cuisine, Don Choche, Curry Leaf, Tako Ten, Tap N Taco, Federidelfos, Il Vicino.

Samantha Ruiz
Hello! I’m Samantha Ruiz and I usually go by Sam. My go-to hidden gems are Le Bistro and El Paisa. If you are in the South Valley area, El Paisa has great tacos and burritos. But don’t sleep on the tortas, their asada torta is one of my favorites. Le Bistro is in the state fairgrounds area off San Pedro. I order their Chicken Pad Thai and their Beef Pho. They also have a few baked goods and a variety of smoothies. I always grab melon bread on the way out to eat at home. Give it a try and let me know how you like them.
-
Sam! Great recommends! I still haven’t been to El Paisa, but, sadly, Le Bistro is great but is closed. I hope it’s temporary, but I can’t tell. That is so sad, because San Pedro is a food mecca…On that one street you have Coda, Alqud’s, Asian Pear, A1 market, El Mesquite, etc.

Hi Sam, I grew up in the South Valley, and El Paisa is definitely a staple in the area. The food is always amazing, and the service is consistently great.

Allison Tomes
Hi everyone! I’m Allison. I really appreciate all the food recommendations! Definitely will be taking note of all of them.
Two places I can recommend are Mr. Tokyo in NE Heights (great sushi and fried rice), and Crepes Brulee by San Mateo (amazing combination of crepes and creme brulee).

Ruth Cabrera
Hello! My name is Ruth. A hidden gem I recommend is Fun Noodle Bar. They have some of the best soup dumplings I’v tried in Albuquerque.
-
Ruth! Yes…I can’t believe I haven’t tried this place yet. Totally my kind of joint. Thanks so much.

Charlotte Hatfield
Hello! I am going to have to try this one!

Brigette Zamora
Hi guys:) My name is Brigette and that’s what I like to be called. I thought recommending a local restaurant would be easy but I failed to remember every place I love was annihilated during covid. RIP Fu Yuang( my favorite Korean restaurant)and Tonari No Mise( the only place that sold dorayaki) :,). Although, Arirang is a solid choice for Korean food and they live on, fortunately. I was also relieved that Kimo’s Hawaiian Barbeque made it through Covid because it was closed for the longest time, I thought they were a goner until literally last week. BUT, they have really quality simple Hawaiian dishes like spam masubi, pork katsu or teriyaki chicken, white rice, and macaroni salad. Kinda basic, but the combination of these dishes are so satisfying to me and I highly recommend. Although, I have yet to be back since I thought it was gone forever so if it has gone downhill, I’m sorry!!!
-
Brigette,
I know…Covid got three of my favorites, too: Magokoro, T&T gas mart (cheap Vietnamese), and Taco Fundacion.
Nooo, not spam masubi, you weirdo. (Just playing.) I still haven’t tried Kimo’s, so you win. I only eat beef or pork if it’s a special occasion, so I rarely eat Hawaiian anymore. But I grew up as a surfer and would visit Kauai and used to love the food back then.
Have you tried Nagomi up on Juan Tabo? Good curry and katsu at good prices.
-
Charlotte Hatfield
Hi, I love Hawaiian BBQ! A Hawaiian BBQ place just recently opened in Rio Rancho.
-
Yep, “L&L Hawaiian BBQ” at Westside and 528…I have a Hawaiian buddy that tried it, and he said it was pretty good. And that’s huge, because nothing impresses that guy.
-
Kanoa Kamauoha
Shoots! Ono kind grinds at da L&L!
-
Kanoa,
As a young surfer, we used to try to sound Hawaiian and would say things like, “Ooh, da kind grinds bruddah”…yes, we were stupid haolies. So could you translate? Have you tried “L&L” and would recommend it?

Austin Shaw
Hello, my name is Austin. I recently went to a place called The Block, it is a cool place to hang out with friends. I tried one of the places you can find there called Stackers, and they make a really good smash burger. The green chile burger was amazing as well as the patty melt! The fries were also really good.
-
John sena
Hello, my name is John. I would have to recommend Burger Boy as a hidden gem, so if anyone is heading up our Sandia Mountains, I would strongly suggest stopping by. They are a mom-and-pop-owned restaurant, and I always find it nice to stop there before heading up.

Summer Trammell
Hi!
My name is Summer and my two favorite local places are Viet Taste by Coronado Mall and Sawmill Market in downtownish. Viet taste has the absolute best porchops and at a small price as well. As for Sawmill, I love it because you can get something different everytime you go and it is always delicious! I look forward to being in this class with all of you this semester!
-
Ash
Hello Summer,
Sawmill reminds of Los Angeles so much, we had something just like that. I live closer to the block, just waiting for more business to grow out here and set up shop at the block. Sawmill is a great place for families and friends you just want a little of everything or different meal ideas.

A couple of my favorite local restaurants are O’Ramen, they are my favorite ramen place here which is in the UNM area. Another favorite is Basil Leaf, they have some delicious food and the mango sticky rice is something I HAVE to get each time I go whether I eat it there or bring it home!!
-
Great recommends…ORamen (between Ramens try the curry with croquettes) is probably the best ramen place in town and Basil Leaf is one of the best Vietnamese places. You know your stuff!

Michaelle Talamantes
Hello. My preferred name is Michaelle. I wouldn’t consider this a cheap option, but one of my favorite restaurants is Island Vibes Cuisine. Before going to Island Vibes Cuisine, I had never tried oxtail, but now I think it’s delicious, and I order some every time I go. If you ever want to try Jamaican food, I think this restaurant is a wonderful place to go.
-
Ash
Hello Michaelle,
oh, I would have to try that place. I love oxtail soup, which make a great broth too. Jamaican food sounds really good, I would have to make my way across town to try it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Valeria Tena
Hello everyone! My name is Valeria Tena and I go by Valeria. A local place that I really like is Naruto, an authentic Hakata-style ramen bar. The food there is amazing! Although it can tend to get just a little pricey. Its a great place for noodles and just the overall service is great! 100% recommend if you are a fan of ramen! I look forward to learning from you all this semester and good luck to everybody!

Rosenda Hernandez
Hi All, My name is Rosenda you can call me Rose or Rosenda. I have a few favorite food places. Breakfast Mac’s la Sierra coffee shop on the westside of town off Central and 63rd amazing breakfast! Very reasonable pricing and daily specials. Leroy’s New Mexican food is another amazing breakfast gem. I am a steak girly! The best steak I have had so far in NM is Embers at isleta casino. It is reasonably priced but so worth it!

Carlos Emiliano Martinez Bedolla
Hi everyone!
My name is Carlos Emiliano Martinez Bedolla, but i go by Emiliano. One of my favorite hidden gem restaurants is “El Chamo Arabe”, which serves incredible Venezuelan food. They have two spots, one in San Mateo and Menaul, and another in the block at Rio Rancho. I also love “Phoukup” in Tin Can Alley, it’s a great place for Vietnamese food!
-
I love Pho, and I am always hunting for a cheaper place than the ones near me. There are so many good Vietnamese spots in town. I just wish I wasn’t so cheap.
I might give “El Chamo Arabe” a try, but I was sad that I didn’t see fried yucca on the menu… My go to places for South/Central American food are “Pollitos con Papa” on Gibson and “Papaturro” on 4th.

Ash
Hello everyone,
My name is Ashley but I go by Ash. Still new to the state of New Mexico. There a spot in Bernalillo called Lupes Antojitoes Mexican food. It a hidden gem off the 550, the food is very close to California Mexican food. I recommend the soups and Chilli relleno. Check them off in the area.

-
Ash,
Now I am so sad that I don’t live near there. I looked into “Lupes Antojitoes”, and it looks perfect for me. My go to Mexican dish is chile relleno, and I eat alot, and I am cheap, and I prefer Baja/California-style Mexican food. Waaa! (sound of the waambulance) Great recommendation. (I just whined to wifey, and she said if we just go up 4th street it’s not too far…woohoo! She just put it on our itinerary, because she misses that style food as much as me.)

Emma M
Hello I misunderstood the Introductions lol. A little hole in the wall I like is The Bagel. This shop has been a family classic for years. Their bagels are yummy and handmade. They have sandwiches for a fine price and its a local business that you should support.
-
Emma M

Hello Emma,
I think I have heard of them, do they usually sale at the local grower market which is hosted at the Robinson Park. I don’t live in that area but I do love me a good fresh bagel. If it not them where is the Bagel located at?
-Ash
-
I looked it up (but the name made it tricky)…”The Bagel” is a deli in Rio Rancho on Southern. In the same center is a solid Vietnamese place called, “Pho Bar”.

Kanoa Kamauoha
Hello friends! Currently, I am sitting at 30,000 feet or so above the Aegean Sea returning from two weeks in Greece. We went to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. There are so many wonderful places to eat, a restaurant on every corner it seems. But, for ABQ, Chello Grill on San Mateo off Cutler is very authentic. The owners are Armenian do the food right. We pre-gamed for the trip several times.

Miguel
Hello everyone, my name is Miguel (my friends call me Marcel). Firstly, I want to say that I love to try new food places especially Greek or middle eastern food. that being said my hidden Gem here in Albuquerque would have to be Yasmin’s cafe, the food there is amazing, and the staff are very nice I love to get the lamb plate with extra salad. I eat there every chance I get and I would definitely recommend. it’s a nice little spot on central just before university.
-
I’ll second that…Yasmin’s is great.
-
-
Mel
Awe Ruth you stole my recommendation. I love me some fun noodle they used to have a great suki (Ifoget how its spelled) but I’ve tried alot of dishes there can’t decide which one is my favorite but the suki I tried was great it was like a green apple I think. I totally stole the bottle but haven’t been able to find it anywheres kinda sad about it.
