Reply with your name, what you prefer to be called, and then recommend a local, low price food joint that is a hidden gem.

I’m Jeff Salbato (your teacher), but I prefer Jeff. You only need to introduce yourself in one of these sub-topics, but, because I’m the supposed leader here, I’ll post in all of them…

Hidden food joints: Arirang Korean, Coda Vietnamese Bakery, Magokoro Japanese (closed for now), Viet Rice, Gyros Mediterranean, Thai Cuisine, Don Choche, Curry Leaf, Tako Ten, Tap N Taco, Federidelfos, Il Vicino.

              Hi Professor Salbato,

My name is Elena, and I’m a student in your Introduction to Philosophy Spring course. I would consider myself a foodie and love to try new spots! I’ve tried a lot of the places on your list, but excited to try the ones I haven’t.

Hello, My name is Nevaeh Duran. I love to try new food spots but aside from that i love to cook and bake. I find it calming and rewarding. I also like to try new types of food quite often. When i was younger i hated avocados, i kept making myself try them over and over until i eventually liked them. I like to try cooking foods in different unexpected ways.

Nevaeh, I too enjoy cooking and when I first saw this discussion on food my thoughts went too home cooked recipes, not low priced restaurants. You can’t get any lower priced than home. But I find that younger generations won’t cook. During COVID, I saw an upsurge because of our isolation. Now it’s back to fast food. Your thoughts?

                    Hi all,

ORamen, Tia B’s, and Saggios are phenomenal reminders. I especially need to get back to ORamen. I keep looking for another ramen spot closer to home, but I haven’t yet found one as good as ORamen.

                        Hi Professor Salbato,

My name is Kaydence, and I also love trying new affordable places to eat. One of my favorite places that’s down the street from my house is called “El Modelo’s.” It’s my go-to spot for carne adobada burritos!

Kaydence, El Modelo has been a beloved Barelas restaurant for decades. Did you know it is on the National Register of Historic Places? I have been eating there since the early 1960’s. My grand parents lived on 4th and Pacific (by the Arrow Food market) and I was a student at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Good Stuff-ings!

                            Hi everybody!
My name is Ashley. I am all about hidden gems that are amazing food places. I have 3 in specific I’d like to share! I am all about iced coffee and drinks mostly. Number 1 is Ma’s Tea House on the west side of ABQ. They have great boba, pho (on some weekends), and snacks to share! Number 2 is Park Square Market in uptown. This one is a bit hidden behind some buildings, but the atmosphere is great and they have many food and coffee shops. My favorite is Neko Neko or the coffee shop hidden in the corner of the market! It’s never been super busy. The third is Drop Cafe in the middle of ABQ. The atmosphere is absolutely stunning and the coffee and snacks they have are so good. I’m excited to see and try all of your recommendations!

My name is Andrew Antonen. I like to be called “Andrew”. I consider Dragon Sushi a low-priced hidden gem. This place offers all sushi rolls 50% off. They do not have many sides or other items to order. They are very basic but serve quality food.

I never tried sushi till my daughter introduced me to it, so I am always trying new sushi spots, so this is one I will surely try. Especially when they have discounted prices cuz there are some pricey places put here.

I love sushi, but haven’t tried Dragon Sushi yet. Have you tried Tamashi? They have a location on the west side, Unser and Ladera, and a location on the east side, San Mateo and Paseo. So far, they have been my favorite!

I love to eat mostly authentic Mexican but my favorite hidden gem I would have to say is called Eat My Thai, the food there is amazing. Hi everyone!
My name is Maya Roybal but I prefer Maya. This introduction really excited me because I have a huge love for food! I actually do content creation on the side that focuses on food, cafes and other fun things to do in Albuquerque! If you are foodie/coffee/matcha/outdoor lover, check out my IG @mayabirdssabq and my tiktok @mayabirdss for all the gems in Albuquerque.

I can recommend a few places for people on a budget. My favorite sushi spot is Ichiban on the west side, they have killer happy hour deals like 2 maki rolls for $12. If you want something more on the go, there is a market called Kim’s Oriental Market which has Seoul Gimbap, they make and sell fresh handmade onigiris with a bunch of different options for around $6.

Other places to check out: Tea Lab, Naruto Ramen, Thicc Pizza, Christy Mae’s, Little Bear Coffee, Bristol Doughnuts, Taaj Mahal (buffet), Barelas Coffee House, Burque Bakehouse, iGrill, Lost Cultures Tea Bar, Kokio Fried Chicken.

                                                    Maya,

Ichiban is our go-to sushi joint, but lately we have been impressed by the All-You-Can-Eat spread at Sushi King, even though they are usually just good but not great. But, for value, we are starting to go there more.

And let me second your endorsements of Kim’s, Naruto, and Taj Mahal (and also Taaj Palace…your name combined those two…you were trying to trick me!).

I am Mr Ed. A life long resident of Albuquerque and a Film Production student at the ATC Campus on Alameda Blvd. I decided to open a new topic “Favorite Movies” but as I am now returning to our discussion boards I find that the category does not exist (Jeff can you help?) So I will respond to this Food discussion. First of all let me ask.. What is low price? I know McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and other Corps all have “Value Menus” at $5, $7, $9, etc. So I will suggest single person lunch and dinner prices from $10-$20. Fair?

UNM/Nob Hill – Two Fools Tavern – British/Scottish cuisine. Best Fish and Chips this side of San Diego. Bangers, Scottish eggs.

UNM – West of Central – Anyone been to Yasmine’s Mediterranean?

Central NE – Cafe de lat – Vietnamese cuisine. Great menu items and portions.

Central SE – Coda Bakery – Vietnamese food. Wow, their new location is fantastic.

San Mateo/Lomas – Quarter Celtic – Brew Pub. Xlnt Reuben sandwich and Fish ‘n Chips.

Paseo del Norte/San Pedro – Cocina Azul – NM Style Mexican food. Out of this world chile (HOT). Taco Burgers w/fries, Flautas, Creamy Green Chile Chicken Soup Wow! Calabacitas.

                                                            Mr. Ed,

Yasmine’s and Cocina Azul are great, but I haven’t been to either of them in years.

I have been recommended Cafe de Lat a few times but haven’t been yet.

Coda Bakery was in my original post, and that is some of the best food in town, period.

So, let’s see, what can I add… How about Pollito con Papas? Get the stuffed potato and yuka fries.
